WORKSHOPS
The Missoula Oblongata also teach workshops.
These workshops can be tailored to the needs and wants of the people taking
them. The company is always happy to provide anything from a post-performance
talk-back to a 9-hour intensive in creative collaboration. We have, however,
tried to create workshops that focus on the skills and tools which we personally
find useful within our own work and our own collaboration. We have tried to
create workshops that, like our productions, challenge traditional ideas about
performance, collaboration, and theatricality. The exercises and experiments
that we teach have roots in storytelling, clown, and various physical traditions.
In each workshop, great emphasis is placed on:
1. Helping students realize their greatest ambitions on stage
2. Body awareness and connection
3. The collaborative process
Workshops can be as short as an hour or two, or ideally can stretch over the
course of a few days. The company is also always available to talk about our
favorite subjects, including “the business of touring as independent
theatre-makers” and “the realities of being a female company in
a business dominated by men.”
For the record, these workshops are not a financial thing. We do not teach
for the money, but often teach workshops either for free, or simply with a
“suggested donation.” We teach workshops because we absolutely
love to teach them and it makes us feel really good. If you would like to
take one, or if you want one in your town, or if you just want more information
about this whole thing, please e-mail
donnasellinger@gmail.com with the subject line, “Is there any way
you can make me a star?”
